What FORScan is, and what this site is for
FORScan is a diagnostic and module configuration application for Ford, Lincoln, Mercury and Mazda vehicles. It reads and clears fault codes across every module the vehicle exposes — not just the engine — shows live PIDs, runs service procedures such as electric parking brake retraction and injector coding, and lets you view and edit As-Built module configuration so you can enable or change factory features that were switched off when the car left the plant. That last part is why people install it, and it is also why a careless session can cause real problems.
Forscan.com is an independent guide site. We are not the developers, we do not host the software, and we do not sell licences. The FORScan software itself — the free Windows version, the Lite mobile builds and the Extended licence — is downloaded only from the official site, forscan.org. If a page offers you a “FORScan download” from anywhere else, a cracked Extended licence, or an installer bundled with extras, close it. What we publish here is the practical part: how to install it on Windows without falling over driver issues, which adapter actually works on your model year, which coding changes are worth doing and how to do them safely, and how to get out of trouble when a scan will not connect.
Important, from Henry (site owner): Windows FORScan can do the full job — diagnostics, service functions and module configuration — only if both of these are true. One: a paid Extended licence. The free two-month trial Extended licence is not 100% functional, so do not assume the trial unlocks everything. Two: a fully compatible adapter. That means OBDLink (EX / MX+) and the small set of other adapters FORScan actually recommends — not a generic ELM327. The OHP ELM327 is still a sensible budget option for codes, live data and many config jobs, but it is not in the “100% compatible / full functionality” set. See the 2026 adapter comparison.

Troubleshoot a problem
Work through the common failures: FORScan will not detect the adapter, “vehicle is not connected”, MS-CAN modules missing, dropped Bluetooth mid-write, Extended licence not recognised, or a change that did not take. Licences: Standard vs Extended
Read this first: full functionality needs a paid Extended licence AND a fully compatible adapter. The free two-month trial Extended licence is not 100% functional — treat it as a look at what Extended does, not the complete tool. Pair a paid licence with an OBDLink EX or MX+ (or another adapter FORScan lists as recommended) if you want diagnostics, service functions and configuration to all work properly.
The free Standard version of FORScan does a great deal: full-system fault code reading and clearing, live data, freeze frames, basic tests and reports. For most owners diagnosing a warning light, that is enough and there is nothing to buy.
The Extended licence unlocks the service and configuration functions: module As-Built editing, key programming, injector and PATS procedures, ABS bleeding, PCM/TCM adaptive resets and similar. The developers issue a free two-month trial Extended licence per user, and paid licences after that, tied to your machine. The trial is not 100% functional, so if you need service and configuration work fully available, buy a paid Extended licence — that is the only version with full functionality. Licences are not sold on this site — you request them from your account on forscan.org, and that is the only legitimate source. Anything advertised as a permanent cracked or shared Extended key is not worth the risk to your vehicle’s modules.
Adapters: budget and premium
Note: full functionality needs a fully compatible adapter as well as a paid Extended licence. Only OBDLink (EX / MX+) and a few others FORScan lists as recommended count as 100% compatible; a generic ELM327 does not. The OHP ELM327 stays the budget pick for codes, live data and many config jobs, but OBDLink is the choice if you want everything to work.
Two choices cover almost everyone:
- Budget — OHP ELM327 (FORScan edition, USB or Wi-Fi): an inexpensive adapter with the HS-CAN/MS-CAN switch FORScan needs on older Fords. It is slower on large module reads and less tolerant of long sessions, but for reading codes, live data and occasional coding on a well-charged battery it does the job.
- Premium — OBDLink EX (USB) or OBDLink MX+ (Bluetooth): faster, far more stable, and the safer pick if you intend to write configuration. The EX is the one to buy if your laptop can sit in the cabin on a cable; the MX+ if you want wireless and iOS/Android support too. Note the MX+ has no MS-CAN switch, so on pre-2016 vehicles you may still want a switched adapter alongside it.
Model year and market matter more than brand loyalty here, so check the 2026 adapter comparison against your own vehicle before ordering.
Before you change anything: safety
- Back up your As-Built data first. Read and save the full As-Built for every module you intend to touch, and keep the file somewhere you can find it. If a change misbehaves, that file is how you put the module back exactly as it was. Write down the original values of any line you edit, too.
- Watch battery voltage. Module writes are the one job where a flat battery does real damage. Aim to stay above about 12.5 V, use a proper battery support unit or charger for longer sessions rather than idling the engine, and abandon a write if voltage starts sagging.
- One change at a time. Apply a single edit, exit, cycle the ignition, and confirm the behaviour before moving on. Batched changes are painful to unpick.
- Use a stable connection. Never write configuration over a flaky Bluetooth link, and do not unplug the adapter or close the laptop lid mid-write.
- Check compatibility and read the whole guide before you start. FORScan is powerful; careful setup prevents almost every avoidable problem.
