FORScan Warning: “Adapter Not Compatible” — Don’t Panic
A FORScan “adapter not compatible” message is a signal to stop and check the setup. It does not always mean the adapter is unusable, but it should not be ignored — especially before configuration changes or programming.
Do not panic, and do not keep writing. If you were about to change a module, stop. A warning you have not checked is cheaper to pause on than a module you have to put back. Then work through the checks below, in order, before you retry a connection.
Check these three things first
- Your device and FORScan version. Windows, Android, and iPhone/iPad do not support the same adapter connections or features. Configuration work is a Windows job. FORScan Lite on a phone is for supported mobile diagnostics and tests, not for changing vehicle settings. If you are on Lite and trying to do a Windows-only task, the warning — or a missing function — is expected. Start with Start here if you still need to pick a platform.
- Your task. Reading codes is different from configuration and programming. Configuration work requires FORScan for Windows and a paid Extended licence. The free two-month trial Extended licence is not 100% functional, so do not assume the trial unlocks every write. Standard is enough for codes, live data and basic tests.
- Your adapter connection. It must connect reliably and support the Ford networks your vehicle needs, including HS-CAN and MS-CAN where applicable. A stable Windows wired setup is usually the right starting point for coding work.
HS-CAN and MS-CAN on older Fords
Many Fords built before roughly 2016 need both HS-CAN and MS-CAN, not a random ELM327 that cannot switch those networks. When the adapter cannot see both, FORScan misses body modules, drops the session, or warns that the adapter is not compatible.
If your adapter has a physical HS-CAN / MS-CAN switch, set it for the network the job needs, then reconnect. The OBDLink MX+ has no MS-CAN switch, so on pre-2016 vehicles you may still want a switched adapter alongside it. This is a setup check, not a reason to force a write through the warning.
Clone, generic ELM327, and the budget limit
Windows FORScan is fully functional only with a 100% compatible adapter: OBDLink EX, OBDLink MX+, and the small set FORScan actually recommends. A generic or clone ELM327 is not in that set. Those listings often cannot switch Ford networks, drop mid-session, or trigger this warning even when they “connect.”
The OHP ELM327 (FORScan edition, USB or Wi-Fi) is the budget pick for codes, live data and many config jobs, with a real limit: it is not “100% compatible / full functionality.” It is slower on large module reads and less tolerant of long sessions. USB vs Bluetooth, and the COM port
Some USB adapters install automatically; others need a driver from the adapter maker. Bluetooth and Wi-Fi adapters need to be paired or connected in Windows before FORScan can use them. Confirm that Windows sees the adapter before you open FORScan. The Windows install guide covers drivers, COM port setup, and the first connection.
- USB: connect the adapter and install its driver if Windows asks for one. For configuration work, a wired adapter is the easiest starting point.
- Bluetooth: pair the adapter in Windows first, then use the connection Windows created. Make sure Windows is connected to the adapter — not another device. Other Bluetooth devices can interfere.
- Wi-Fi: connect the laptop to the adapter’s Wi-Fi network before opening FORScan.
Never write configuration over a flaky Bluetooth link, and do not unplug the adapter or close the laptop lid mid-write. If the link is unstable, switch to a wired session before you touch As-Built.
When the warning is expected vs when to stop
The warning is often expected when the setup is wrong for the vehicle or the job: a generic ELM327 clone, the HS-CAN / MS-CAN switch in the wrong position on an older Ford, Windows not seeing the COM port, Bluetooth not paired, or Lite on a phone being asked to do Windows configuration. In those cases, fix the setup. Do not treat the message as noise and continue writing.
Stop — do not write — if FORScan cannot see the modules you expect, drops the connection, or still warns about compatibility after you have checked device, licence, and adapter. Confirm the vehicle ignition state, app version, cable or Bluetooth connection, and whether other Bluetooth devices are interfering. If the warning persists with a supported setup (paid Extended on Windows plus an OBDLink EX / MX+ or another adapter FORScan lists as recommended), record the exact message and adapter model before asking the FORScan community or the adapter maker for support.
Do not guess before making changes. A stable Windows wired setup, a charged battery (aim to stay above about 12.5 V), and an As-Built backup of every module you intend to touch are the conditions for a write. None of those replace a compatible adapter.

New user to Forscan!!
I just got my OBDlink EX USB had a bit of trouble because when I download the license file it opens as a PDF file, that the forscan installation can not find, I changed the Open with to Edge and that created a .txt file that the installation could read. once in the vehicle with a green light on the Scaner I found the PDM module under Configuration and programing. When I select the PDM file it shows selected by turning the selection blue, however I can not figure out how to open it to make my desired changes. Help
