Most people start here: read and clear error codes
A DTC is simply an error code stored by the vehicle—such as a sensor, engine, ABS, airbag, or body-system fault. FORScan can read these codes, show useful live data, and clear a code after you have fixed the underlying problem.
For reading and clearing codes, you can use a supported adapter with Windows, Android, iPhone, or iPad. Pick the adapter to suit the device you already own.
What does “configuration” mean?
Configuration means changing a setting that already exists in your vehicle’s modules. Think of it as changing options, not installing new software.
- Changing how the headlights behave.
- Turning off the double-honk warning.
- Setting the tyre size after fitting larger tyres, so the speedometer and systems use the right information.
- Updating a fuel-tank setting after fitting a different tank, so the fuel gauge can be set up correctly where the vehicle supports it.
- Adjusting available idle, lighting, lock, display, or comfort settings.
These changes need a Windows laptop, FORScan for Windows, the appropriate Extended License, a compatible adapter, a backup of the original settings, and stable battery voltage. A reliable wired adapter is the simplest and safest choice for this work.
What does “programming” mean?
Programming is more serious. It means writing data or software to a vehicle module. You might encounter it after replacing a component that needs to be set up for the car, or during certain repair procedures. It is not the same as clearing an error code or changing a light setting.
Programming is a Windows-only job and can require additional hardware such as a J2534 PassThru interface, depending on the vehicle and procedure. Do not attempt it just because an adapter connects—follow the specific repair instructions and keep the battery voltage stable.

iPhone and iPad: simple wireless diagnostics
FORScan Lite for iOS is useful for supported mobile diagnostics. For Bluetooth use, OBDLink MX+ is the well-known compatible choice. iPhone and iPad are handy for reading codes, live data, tests, and supported service work—but not for configuration or programming.
Android: flexible diagnostics on the go
FORScan Lite for Android works with supported USB, Bluetooth, and Wi-Fi adapters. It is a good route for diagnostics, live data, tests, and supported service functions. For changing vehicle settings, use a Windows laptop instead.
Windows: the full FORScan setup
Windows is the right choice if you may eventually change settings, configure modules, or follow Ford coding guides. For a stable configuration setup, OBDLink EX is the straightforward wired option. If you only need basic diagnostics, a compatible lower-cost adapter can be enough—provided it supports the Ford networks your vehicle needs.
