How to Install FORScan on Windows (Step-by-Step Guide)

Windows is the full version of FORScan. Use it if you want to read and clear error codes, see live data, run tests, or eventually change vehicle settings such as lights, tyre size, or comfort options.

This is how to install FORScan on Windows: download from forscan.org, set up the adapter drivers and COM port, then make the first successful connection. You do not need the vehicle connected just to install the program. Phone-based Lite on Android or iPhone is fine for diagnostics; it cannot change vehicle settings.

Read this before you rely on the install. Windows FORScan is fully functional only if both are true: a paid Extended licence (the free two-month trial is not 100% functional), and a 100% compatible adapter — OBDLink EX, OBDLink MX+, and the small set FORScan actually recommends. A generic ELM327 is not in that set. The OHP ELM327 is the budget pick for codes, live data and many config jobs, but it is not “100% compatible / full functionality.”

What you need before installing FORScan

  • A Windows laptop or PC.
  • A compatible FORScan adapter.
  • Your Ford, Lincoln, or Mazda vehicle nearby for the first connection.
  • Internet access to download FORScan from forscan.org and, if needed, request an Extended licence there.

Step 1: Download FORScan from the official site

Download the Windows installer only from the official FORScan download page. Forscan.com does not host the software and does not sell licences. Choose the current Windows release unless you have a specific reason to test a beta. Save the installer in Downloads. If Windows or your security software raises a warning, confirm the file came from forscan.org before you continue. If a page offers a “FORScan download” from anywhere else, a cracked Extended licence, or an installer bundled with extras, close it.

Step 2: Install the program

  1. Open the downloaded installer.
  2. Follow the setup prompts. The default installation location is normally fine.
  3. Finish the installation, then open FORScan.

Step 3: Drivers and the COM port

FORScan cannot talk to the car until Windows can see the adapter. Some USB adapters install automatically; others need a driver from the adapter maker (OBDLink, OHP, or whoever made it) — not from a random “ELM327 driver” listing. Many USB adapters take power from the vehicle, so plug the adapter into the OBD-II port and turn the ignition on before you look for a COM port.

  1. Open Device Manager and expand Ports (COM & LPT).
  2. A working USB adapter appears as a COM port. The number is assigned by Windows and is not the same on every laptop. Unplug and replug if you need to see which entry appears. Note that COM number.
  3. The adapter should also show in Windows “Devices and printers” once the driver is in place.

Then open FORScan Settings (the gear) and the Connection tab. FORScan’s own support recommendation is Auto for the connection parameters. If more than one interface is present, or Auto does not find it, set the connection type explicitly and choose the same COM port you saw in Device Manager.

  • USB: connect the adapter, install the maker’s driver if Windows asks, then confirm the COM port before you open FORScan.
  • Bluetooth: pair the adapter in Windows first, then use the connection Windows created — not another device.
  • Wi-Fi: join the adapter’s Wi-Fi network before opening FORScan.

For configuration work, a stable wired adapter is the easiest starting point — usually an OBDLink EX on a cable. Step 4: Connect to the vehicle for the first time

  1. Plug the adapter into the vehicle’s OBD-II port, usually below the dashboard near the driver’s seat, and confirm it is fully seated.
  2. Turn the ignition on as instructed by your vehicle and FORScan; do not start the engine unless a procedure calls for it.
  3. Open FORScan and select the correct connection type if it asks. If you already set the COM port in Step 3, use that same setting.
  4. Let FORScan read the vehicle information and modules before attempting any change.

A first session that only looks is a successful session. Start with codes and live data. Do not write configuration on a brand-new install.

What is the Extended licence?

The standard Windows version is enough for many diagnostic jobs: reading and clearing error codes (DTCs), viewing live data, and running supported tests. You do not need Extended merely to install FORScan or read a code.

Extended unlocks additional service functions and configuration changes — lighting behaviour, tyre size, or other module settings where the vehicle supports them. Full functionality needs a paid Extended licence and a fully compatible adapter. FORScan currently provides a free two-month Extended trial through forscan.org; treat it as a look at what Extended does, not the complete tool. If FORScan cannot connect

Work through these checks in order. Do not write settings while the connection is unstable.

  • Confirm Windows sees the adapter in Device Manager (and, for USB, a COM port) before opening FORScan.
  • Confirm the ignition position and that the adapter is fully seated. A USB adapter that is not powered from the vehicle may never appear as a COM port.
  • For Bluetooth or Wi-Fi, make sure Windows is connected to the adapter — not another device or network.
  • If Auto does not find it, set the connection type and COM port to match Device Manager.
  • If FORScan reads only some modules or disconnects, stop before changing settings and check whether the adapter supports the Ford networks your vehicle needs. Many Fords built before roughly 2016 need HS-CAN and MS-CAN.
  • If FORScan warns that the adapter is not compatible, stop and read adapter not compatible, don’t panic before you continue.

FORScan’s own support treats a “No adapter found” failure as a setup problem: missing USB drivers, Bluetooth not paired, Wi-Fi not joined, or a clone the software cannot identify. Fix the setup. Do not treat that message as a reason to force a write.
