Why the Double Honk Drives F-150 Owners Crazy

You park your Ford F-150, turn it off, close the door, and walk away. Then… HONK HONK! That double honk can wake up the whole neighborhood at night or embarrass you in quiet places. It is a built-in safety feature, but most owners want it gone.

The good news? You can disable it yourself in under 30 minutes using FORScan software and a simple OBD2 adapter. No trip to the dealer. No special tools. Thousands of F-150 owners have already done it.

This guide uses simple language (ELI20 style). We explain every step like you are 20 years old and English might not be your first language. Ready? Let’s make your truck quiet!

What You Need (Our Top Recommendations)

Here is the simple list. We link to popular Amazon choices because they are top sellers and work great with FORScan.

1. Windows Laptop or PC

FORScan works best on Windows for full programming features. See our separate post: How to Install FORScan on Windows (coming soon or link it here).

2. Compatible OBD2 Adapter (Most Important!)

Not every cheap ELM327 works well. You need one that supports both HS-CAN and MS-CAN buses (Ford uses two different networks). Here are our top picks that Henry and many users love:

  • OBDLink EX USB – Best overall choice. Super reliable, fast, and recommended for all F-150 years (especially 2021+). Top seller on Amazon for FORScan users.
  • OBDLink MX+ Bluetooth/WiFi – Great if you prefer wireless. Also excellent for 2021+ trucks.
  • vLinker FS or OHP Ford USB – Solid budget options that many F-150 owners use successfully.

3. FORScan Software + Extended License

Download the free Windows version from the official site: forscan.org. The free version is good for reading codes. For changing settings like double honk, get the Extended License (very cheap, or use the free 2-month trial). It unlocks full programming power.

4. FORScan F-150 Spreadsheet (Highly Recommended)

This free Google Sheet tells you exactly which module and value to change for your exact truck year. Search Google for “FORScan F150 spreadsheet 2015-2020” or “2021+”. There are different sheets for different years because Ford changes things.

⚠️ Important Safety Warnings Before You Start

  • Always make a backup first! If anything goes wrong, you can restore your truck to factory settings in 2 minutes.
  • Work with the key in ON position (dashboard lights on) but engine OFF.
  • Do not unplug the adapter or turn off the laptop while writing changes.
  • This mod only disables an existing feature. It cannot break your truck if done correctly.
  • Changes do not void your warranty (Magnuson-Moss Act in USA). Dealers cannot easily see it unless they look specifically.

Step-by-Step: Disable Double Honk on Ford F-150

Note: Steps are almost the same for 2015-2020 and 2021-2026 models. The exact parameter name or address may differ slightly by year. Use the spreadsheet for your year to be 100% sure.

  1. Install FORScan and your OBD2 adapter drivers (if needed). See our Windows install guide.
  2. Plug the OBD2 adapter into the port under the left side of the dashboard (near the steering wheel). It is a 16-pin connector.
  3. Turn the key to ON (position 2 – all dash lights come on, but do not start the engine).
  4. Open FORScan on your laptop and click the Connect button (green plug icon). It should find your adapter and read the truck VIN automatically.
  5. Backup the BCM module (CRITICAL!) Go to the “Programming” or “Service” tab. Find “BdyCM” or “BCM” (Body Control Module). Click it, then choose “Save As-Built” or “Backup Configuration”. Save the file with a clear name like “F150_BCM_2023_original”. Keep this file safe on your laptop and maybe a USB stick too.
  6. Find the Double Honk setting In FORScan, go to the BCM module configuration (sometimes called “Module Configuration” or use the spreadsheet method). Look for options like:

• “Double Honk on Leaving Cabin” or “Double Horn Honk” or “Exit Honk” or “Horn Feedback”

• Or search in the list for 726-41-02 (common address for this feature)

  1. Change the value to Disabled If FORScan shows a nice name like “Double Honk on Exit – Enabled”, just click Edit and set it to “Disabled”. Click Write (or Program). Confirm with Yes. If it shows hex values (like 0100 0001), change the part that controls the honk from 1 to 0 (example: xxx1 → xxx0). The spreadsheet tells you the exact change for your year.
  2. Cycle the key Turn key OFF, wait 10–15 seconds, turn back to ON. FORScan may say “Programming successful”.
  3. Test it! Close all doors, walk away with the key fob in your pocket. The double honk should be gone. If the engine was running in some cases, test that too.
  4. Clear any trouble codes (optional but good) Go to DTCs tab, read codes, then clear them if any appear (usually none).

Pro Tip from Henry (our F-150 tester): “I did this on my 2023 PowerBoost in 15 minutes. The spreadsheet made it foolproof. Now I can sneak back into the garage at 2 AM without waking my wife and kids!”

What If the Double Honk Is Still There?

Try these in order:

  • Double-check you edited the correct module/address for your exact year (use the spreadsheet).
  • Some trucks have the setting in a different address like 726-38-02 (Lock Feedback Horn).
  • Make sure you wrote the change and cycled the key.
  • Restore your backup and try again – sometimes one write does not stick on first try.

Other Cool Things You Can Do with FORScan on F-150

Once you have the adapter and software, the possibilities are huge. Popular easy mods include:

  • Disable the seatbelt warning chime (great for short drives around the farm)
  • Enable Bambi Mode (automatic high beams that dip for oncoming cars)
  • Change the startup splash screen on the big screen
  • Enable global open/close windows from the key fob
  • Add more info to the instrument cluster (transmission temp, etc.)

We will cover these in future posts. Stay tuned!

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

For reading codes – no. For changing settings like this – yes, it is worth it. The trial period is free for 2 months.

  1. Can I do this on my phone (Android or iPhone)?

The Lite apps can read some data, but programming changes work much better and safer on a Windows laptop. That is why we have the install guide for Windows.

  1. Is it safe? Will it break my truck?

Thousands of owners do this every month. As long as you backup first and follow the steps, it is very safe. You can always go back to the original settings.

  1. How long does it take?

First time: 20–40 minutes including backup. After you know the steps: under 10 minutes.
