FORScan Standard vs Extended License: Which Do You Need?
FORScan has two Windows license levels: Standard and Extended. The good news is that most people can begin with Standard. You only need Extended when you want to use extra service functions or change vehicle settings.
Start with this question: what do you want to do?
| If you want to… | License to start with |
|---|---|
| Read or clear error codes (DTCs) | Standard |
| See live data, such as temperatures or sensor readings | Standard |
| Run supported tests | Standard |
| Change vehicle settings, such as lights, mirrors, tyre size, or available idle settings | Extended |
| Use an additional protected service function | Extended |
What is the Standard License?
The Standard License is the normal free Windows version. It is enough for basic diagnostics: read fault codes, clear codes after a repair, view live data, and run the functions available to Standard users.
If you have just bought an adapter because a warning light came on, start here. You do not need an Extended License merely to see what error code the vehicle has stored.
What is the Extended License?
The Extended License unlocks additional FORScan functions, including configuration changes where the vehicle supports them. Configuration means changing a setting that already exists in a module; it is not the same as loading new software onto the vehicle.
- Changing available lighting behaviour or warning chimes.
- Adjusting available tyre-size or fuel-tank settings after a modification.
- Changing available lock, mirror, display, or idle settings.
These jobs need FORScan for Windows, a compatible adapter, stable battery voltage, and a backup of the original module configuration. Do not buy a mobile-only setup if vehicle settings are your goal.
Do I need Extended for programming?
Programming is different from configuration. It can mean writing data or software to a module, for example during certain replacement-part or repair procedures. It is more advanced, may require procedure-specific hardware, and is not a casual first step. Extended access alone does not make every programming job appropriate or safe.
How to get the Extended License
FORScan currently offers a free two-month Extended License trial. Request it through the official FORScan download page or from the license option inside the current Windows app. Follow the official instructions and keep the activation details for your computer.
The simplest recommendation
Start with Standard if you are diagnosing a fault. Get Extended only when you have a specific settings change or supported service function in mind. For a beginner explanation of diagnostics, configuration, and programming, read our FORScan basics guide.
Before buying hardware, also use our adapter chooser to match the adapter to your device and the job you want to do.

Will this read and code 1994 F250 with 7.3 DI? Can it test the throttle pedal? Can it test Injection Pump Module and other modules and relays?
Unfortunately not. 1994 Heady Duty used older generations communication standards, not available with these products.
