What is the Standard license?

The Standard license is the normal free Windows version. It is enough for basic diagnostics: read fault codes, clear codes after a repair, view live data, and run the functions available to Standard users.

If you have just bought an adapter because a warning light came on, start here. You do not need an Extended license merely to see what error code the vehicle has stored. For most first-time users, Standard answers the immediate question — what is wrong, and has it cleared after the repair — without any license key at all.

Standard is also the right place to learn the software safely. Connect, read the vehicle, save what you find, and get comfortable with live data before you change anything. Nothing in Standard requires you to rush into configuration work on day one.

What is the Extended license?

The Extended license unlocks additional FORScan functions, including configuration changes where the vehicle supports them. Configuration means changing a setting that already exists in a module; it is not the same as loading new software onto the vehicle.

Common examples include:

• Changing available lighting behavior or warning chimes.
• Adjusting available tire-size or fuel-tank settings after a modification.
• Changing available lock, mirror, display, or idle settings.

These jobs need FORScan for Windows, a compatible adapter, stable battery voltage, and a backup of the original module configuration. Do not buy a mobile-only setup if vehicle settings are your goal.

Your adapter matters here, too. For full function, use an adapter FORScan actually recommends. The OBDLink EX and OBDLink MX+ are the full-function picks on this site because they switch HS-CAN and MS-CAN automatically. How to get the free Extended trial

FORScan offers a free two-month Extended license trial. The trial might not be 100% functional. Full Windows function needs a paid Extended license and a 100% compatible adapter (OBDLink EX / MX+ or another adapter FORScan actually recommends). Request licenses only from the official FORScan site (forscan.org) or from the license option inside the Windows app.

1. Install FORScan for Windows from the official site at forscan.org. This site links there only — we do not host downloads.
2. Open FORScan and go to the About page, where you will find your Hardware ID (see below).
3. Follow the official free Extended license route linked from forscan.org and generate your two-month trial key for that Hardware ID.
4. Paste — do not retype — the key into FORScan exactly as provided, and check that your PC system date falls inside the key’s validity period.
5. Restart FORScan if it asks, then confirm the Extended functions you need are now available before you connect to change anything.

Anyone with an approved forscan.org forum account can generate a trial key, and when it expires you can generate another free two-month key. Even so, do not build a long-term plan around repeated trial keys if you need dependable full function — that is what the paid license is for.

How paid activation works

Paid Extended licenses come in 1-year and 3-year terms from the Products page on forscan.org. After payment you receive an Activation Code by email and enter it on FORScan’s About page.

Keep that Activation Code email somewhere safe. If you reinstall Windows, replace PC parts, or move to a different PC and FORScan rejects your key, first check the system date, then check whether the Hardware ID has changed. Paid licenses handle the Hardware ID automatically on activation, but a changed Hardware ID after major PC changes can still mean you need to re-activate with your Activation Code or generate a fresh trial key.

The Hardware ID is a code on FORScan’s About page that ties a license key to your PC. Copy it rather than typing it; one wrong character can make a valid key look broken.

This PC tie is the most common source of license confusion. A key generated for one Hardware ID will not necessarily work after you replace PC parts or reinstall Windows, because the Hardware ID may have changed. Before you assume a key has expired, compare the Hardware ID you used to generate it with the Hardware ID FORScan shows now, and confirm your PC date is correct.

Backup first, then change one thing at a time

A license only unlocks the door. It does not make a change safe by itself. Before any configuration work: save a backup of the original module configuration, keep battery voltage stable, note exactly what you changed, and change one setting at a time so you can undo it. If FORScan warns that your adapter is not compatible, stop and fix the adapter or connection first — do not push through a warning to test whether a paid license helps. It will not.
